How do I schedule an academic advising appointment?
To set up an appointment with your academic advisor, log into myNortheastern > Services and Links > Academic Advising, Training & Other Services > Make Appointment with Advisor. You can also call 617.373.5583 or stop by 100 Meserve during normal business hours.

What should I ask my...?

Academic Advisor: Questions regarding general registration, core requirements, long-term academic planning, study abroad, outstanding transfer credit issues, or leaves of absence.

Faculty Mentor: Questions regarding electives, career paths, and gradschools that relate to your major.

Co-op Coordinator: Questions regarding co-op placement and pattern of attendance changes.

How many credits do I need to take per semester to be considered full time for my scholarship?
16 credits. The final semester of your final year at NU, you will be able to take less than 16 to fulfill graduation requirements. Please consult with Mr. Jackson to verify.

Please allow 2 weeks after the add/drop deadline for your scholarship to disburse to your account. If you still have a balance because your scholarship was not applied for the semester, fill out an SFS inquiry form.

Who do I reach out to about dropping a class(es)?
Your primary academic advisor or Leroy Jackson, the OSOP Scholarship Academic, should be your first point of contact even before dropping a class. You must meet with one of them prior to dropping so you are aware of how that will affect your financial aid and credit progression.

What happens if I drop 1 class?
You will be put on temporary academic probation for one academic semester until you bring up your GPA to your specified scholarship's GPA requirement. See the FAQ page for your specific scholarship requirements.

What happens if I do not meet the GPA requirement?
Boston and Torch scholars who do not meet the GPA requirement will be put in academic probation for 1 academic semester until they are able to bring their grades up. See the FAQ page for your specific scholarship requirements.

When do I have to declare my major?
Undergraduate students may declare their majors upon admission to the university or may elect to join programs for undeclared students before declaring a major. Students must declare a major no later than the end of the sophomore year. Majors and concentrations are described under the various schools and colleges in this catalog.
Students should declare a minor as early as possible and no later than the end of the junior year. Completion of the requirements of a major, minor, or concentration is noted on the transcript.

What happens if I want to change my major?
Undergraduate students enrolled full-time in one or more of the university’s undergraduate schools or colleges may change their major if they meet one of the following transfer criteria:

The student meets the criteria for immediate entry as defined by the receiving major.

The student has a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 2.000 or greater and satisfactorily completes the transition criteria as defined by the receiving major. For GPA below 2.000, change of major is at the discretion of the receiving major.
Students who are considering a major change must discuss their change in person with an advisor in the receiving major. See the online list of advising offices. The advisor will certify that the student meets the criteria for immediate entry to the major or will set up a transition term for the student to satisfy the change-of-major criteria. Advisors will discuss the student’s ability to succeed in the desired program given the current academic record as well as the influence of changing major on the student’s ability to obtain a degree in the desired program within the traditional eight-academic-term time frame.
Transition criteria are designed to help ensure that students who change major have a reasonable chance of academic success and program completion. A list of school and college transition criteria is maintained at the website of the respective school or college. Students wishing to join some majors must also audition or submit a portfolio, as indicated on the aforementioned webpage. Note also that some colleges have deadlines for applications to change major, also indicated on the aforementioned webpage.

Is my scholarship covered if I take summer courses?
Your scholarship will cover your summer courses and housing during the summer so long as you take 8 credits of classes per summer semester. If you need to take more than 8 credits you will need to receive permission from your academic advisor.
We do not encourage students to take less than 8 credits of classes as it will still count as a half semester. If you need further guidance on how your financial aid will look like based on the credits you take during the summer, please email SFS or Jen Schoen.
