Preparing For
Your Arrival

Husky 101 Guide
The Husky 101 Guide details everything you need to know and accomplish before starting your first day of classes at Northeastern University.
What to Pack
Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need for your first year at college. These are just suggestions; you should adapt this list to suit your own situation.
To save on packing or shipping, it might make sense to buy some of these items after you arrive. It might also make sense to pack for one season at a time and switch items when you go home during breaks. International Village, your summer immersion temporary residence placement, does have central AC.
While early September will have some hot days, the Fall climate in Boston cools quickly, dropping from average high temperatures of 73°F to 62°F by October.
After Summer Immersion is over, you will be moving into your yearly residential placement which will most likely be in either one of the Stetson buildings which do not have AC, so please plan accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions
MOVE-IN / TRAVEL
Can I bring a guest?
Yes, you are more than welcome to have guests join you during move-in weekend and orientation! However, OSOP will not be responsible for any costs associated to their travel, lodgings and meals or helping them secure lodgings.
Can I bring my car to campus?
While you can bring your car to campus for the academic year, we do not recommend it. Your scholarship will not cover the cost of your parking permit. Parking is a first come, first serve basis. Please visit the MasParc website for more information how to apply and purchase a parking pass. For move-in, cards can idle outside of International Village until you are finished unloading. Your car will not be towed as it is move-in season. You can park your car in the nearby parking garage which we will give you a pass for to park for free.
Can I pick my roommate for Summer Immersion?
No. We randomize all roommates for all Torchies. You are only living in International Village for the first two weeks of Summer Immersion then you will move into your fall housing assignments in Stetson East (Steast).
Will I have help with move-in?
Yes, we will have Torch Advisors to help you with moving your belongings. We will also have large utility carts to help with the ease of moving. Elevators are located in all buildings. For anyone driving to campus, you may idle your car next to the building while you are unloading. Once you are unloaded, make sure to park your car. We will be giving you a parking pass for the day.
ACADEMICS
When will I receive my Husky ID?
You will get your Husky ID upon your arrival to campus. Once you are checked-in with the OSOP and Housing Staff, you will be given your ID.
I have college credits, how do I get them to transfer?
You will work with your academic advisor during your meeting prior to Summer Immersion to discuss which credits have transferred. You do not need to do anything else to ensure they transfer.
I had a 504/IEP in high school, can I get accommodations at Northeastern?
Yes, you can. Please fill out the necessary paperwork to receive accommodations from the Disability Accesibility Center. The sooner you fill out the paperwork, the better!
HOUSING
Can I room with other Torch Scholars during the school year?
Yes, you can.
I need special medical housing accommodations, what do I do?
Please fill out the necessary paperwork to receive accommodations from the Disability Accesibility Center. The sooner you fill out the paperwork, the better!
Why do we have to move-out of our rooms midway through Summer Immersion?
Stetson East and West are either occupied with summer students or being cleaned/restored for the next incoming class during the first couple of weeks in August. We do this ensure the rooms are clean and properly restored for the beginning of the school year.
SUMMER IMMERSION
May I ship some of my belongings to campus ahead of my arrival?
Due to limited space, we are not able to accept packages on your behalf. We will notify you if and when you are able to send packages to the mail room.
Can I leave to visit my family during Summer Immersion?
In order to experience a truly immersive student experience during Summer Immersion, we ask that you refrain from returning home for the duration of the program. However, we do encourage you to use free time on the weekends to explore Boston at your leisure.
Can I work during Summer Immersion?
Yes, you may have a part-time on-campus/nearby campus job during Summer Immersion so long as it does not conflict with classes, CLS, or weekend events. All Summer Immersion events/classes are mandatory.
Can I have guests during Summer Immersion?
Due to security and safety risks, we cannot accommodate guests during Summer Immersion, especially overnight guests.
HEALTH
Will I have health insurance during Summer Immersion?
Yes, you will.
Do I need to have the NU student health insurance plan?
No, you are not required to have NU Health Insurance and can waive it before August. However, please check your state insurance policies in regard to whether or not you're allowed to have more than 1 health insurance plan at the same time. OSOP recommends it’s better to have NUSHP if your state allows as it is already covered by your scholarship.
Do I need to get my immunizations?
Yes, you must be updated on all immunization prior to your arrival. I would make a doctor's appointment as soon as possible for a physical. If you’re not able to see your doctor before the deadline to submit your paperwork, then check your local CVS Minute Clinics to see if you can schedule a physical.
How do I access my prescriptions away from home?
Please work with Health Services to find an in-network primary care physician who will be able to fill your prescriptions when you're away from home. For anyone who lives far away and will not be able to go back home on a monthly basis to pick up their prescriptions, I would also check with your doctor and see if they can prescribe you a 3 month supply. If not, look into wether or not your pharmacy can ship your prescriptions to you. If not, you could transfer pharmacies that do. Keep in mind, depending on the prescription, they may not be able to ship it outside of state lines!
