Co-Op
Do I still have my scholarship during my co-op?
No. No OSOP Scholar's scholarship is active during co-op as it is not an academic semester. However, majority of Boston and Torch Scholars are pell eligible and are able to qualify for other scholarships and direct loans to cover your tuition, room/board, and meal plan during your co-op. Scholars also find paid co-ops where they use their salary to pay for their personal expenses.
Torch Scholars can receive funding for NUSHP. You can see other types of financial aid listed here. You can also work with your Co-Op Advisor about funding programs. Some students can apply for additional funding if they take unpaid or underpaid co-ops depending on their program.
Whether you choose a 4- or 5-year co-op cycle, you'll only need 8 semesters of course work to complete your degree (barring unforeseen circumstances).

When should I do my co-op?
You have several options. Northeastern provides the flexibility to pursue co-op and other experiential opportunities in a way that fits individual education goals. Full-time undergraduates have the option of completing up to three six-month co-ops in five years or as many as two six-month co-ops in four years.

NOTE: there are multiple possible schedules and not all entering students will follow these examples. Students will work with their academic and co-op coordinator to customize a schedule that best suits their goals and aspirations.

How many co-ops can I do?
We recommend a max of 2 co-op experiences. Anything that will go beyond 8 semesters of study, will most likely not be approved by your academic advisor.

When am I eligible to start co-op?
Students start their first co-op the second semester of their sophomore year or during the summer after their sophomore year.

Are students required to participate in co-op?
Co-op is the cornerstone of a Northeastern education, and most students participate in co-op (for the class of 2016, 96% of graduates participated in at least one co-op, 78% participated in two or more co-ops), but it is not required for graduation. HOWEVER, undergraduates who choose not to pursue co-op are required to fulfill Northeastern’s experiential learning requirements by participating in at least one of the following, research, service learning, or study abroad programs.
