Study Abroad & Dialouge
**NEW FOR FALL 2026**
Securing funding for your study abroad or dialogue program
Starting fall 2026, all students must complete a funding application before scholarship funds can be disbursed for any study abroad or dialogue program. This process helps streamline communication between our office and GEO so you experience less back-and-forth. Here is the new process to secure funding:
1. Get admitted to your program
You must receive official admission into your study abroad or dialogue program before you can submit the funding application. Applications submitted prior to admission will not be accepted.
2. Submit the funding application
Complete the funding application form. You'll be asked to provide details about your program and funding needs. Fill out the application here.
3. SFS verifies with the GEO office
Once your application is received, Student Financial Services will verify your program details with the GEO office. Please allow 14 business days for processing.
Failure to submit this application will result in a delay in your fund disbursement. Please note that our office cannot be held responsible for delays caused by a missing or late submission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have health insurance while studying abroad?
Yes. If you have opted into NUSHP, there is international coverage while abroad. To ensure your provider is covered by NUSHP:
1. Go to BCBS Global Core Website. (Click here)
2. Register by following link at the top right corner.
3. Select the Provider Type. Please remember that NUSHP does NOT include a dental plan.
4. Select the Country and City in which you require care.
5. To confirm that your provider and service is covered by your NUSHP, call BCBS at 1-800-810-2583.
If you do not have NUSHP, you must ask your personal health insurance provider what their global health care coverage is.
When can I study abroad?
We encourage students to study abroad beginning their sophomore year (the summer after their first Spring semester). The first year at Northeastern will be a time to acclimate to your new routine as a college student. Because of this, we would prefer you focus your time and energy on studying and getting used to your new social and academic environment.
Is the cost of studying abroad included in my scholarship?
See the FAQ page for your specific scholarship requirements.
