FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What housing does my scholarship cover?

The Torch, Boston Valedictorian, Boston Public High School, and Oakland Opportunity Scholarships cover an on-campus resident room during your 8 academic semesters (not during co-op) up to an enhanced double (value of $7,720). Please see the "Housing Rates Charts" link above to see what buildings/room types fulfill this requirement.

OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING IS NOT COVERED BY ANY SCHOLARSHIP.

Is my housing covered while I'm on co-op?

No, your scholarship does not cover your housing while on co-op. Please contact Student Financial Services for questions about your financial aid package while on co-op. We always recommend apply for on-campus housing regardless as it is easier to withdraw your housing application than it is to apply for it as on-campus housing is not guaranteed. Be advised there is a deadline to withdraw your housing application as well. Visit the housing website here for more information.

Is my housing covered if I take summer courses?

Yes, your scholarship does cover housing during summer terms. You’ll be expected to enroll full time for that term, which means taking at least 2 courses or 8 credits (otherwise it will not be covered). That summer term will count as 1/2 a semester towards your total of 8 semesters. If you take courses during both summer terms, it would be considered 1 full academic semester.

Do I have to apply for housing every year?

Yes, especially if you plan to live on campus all 4-5 years. All students are required to live on campus for the first 2 years. You can sign a residency waiver if you wish to live off of campus. Before signing, please email Jen for further clarification on how this impacts your housing process.

How does the housing selection process go?

The housing selection process is a lottery. You can find more information about the process and timeline of your housing selection on the housing website by clicking here

Do I have to live on campus during the summer?

No, unless you are planning to take courses during the summer and choose to live on campus out of convenience, then you can. Otherwise, you are not required to live on campus during the summer.

Do I have to live on campus?

You are required to live on campus for the first 2 years while attending Northeastern. After that, you are free to find your own off-campus living. Your scholarship will not cover off-campus housing.

I want to live off-campus during my first/second year, can I do that?

Yes, you can do that. However, you will have to sign a waiver form that will waive your right to guaranteed housing. Please weigh your options carefully before doing that. Visiting the housing website for more information.

I am being charged for not cancelling my housing in time, what do I do?

You must first email housing stating that you no longer need housing. You must agree to accept your cancellation fees. After that, you must fill out a housing cancellation petition form. Housing will reach out for further information on next steps.
